Not just for the butterflies : the multiple boons of being a Butterflyway Ranger

It’s my fourth year, this year, of being a Ranger for the David Suzuki Foundation’s Butterflyway project. Started as the Canadian chapter for the Homegrown National Park (now a separate initiative), this is a Canadian charity’s phenomenal answer to the growing insect biodiversity crisis that’s threatening our way of life. It also changed my perspective on how I can act for nature!

The dirt-mound archipelago: an ode to life in the countryside

Imagine… Until my twenties, I didn’t realize that growing up, the islands on the lake at my parents’ house were nothing more than mounds of earth left there by the truck that had dug up the pond. But that was just one of the realizations that made me laugh at my own carefree youth. Both born in rural areas, my parents dreamed of leaving the city when I was a kid. This is an ode to my life in the country, and a plea to keep our children close to nature.

Is this the simplest iteration of a Wildflower Seed Library?

The advantages are many when comes the time to encourage native plants in our managed landscapes. But getting the seeds of hundreds of species easily can be a problem. That’s where Wildflower Seed Libraries can come in! Here’s what I feel is a native plant seed distribution operation in its most basic form. In many cases, simpler is better; let’s not reinvent the wheel.
